Douglas Creek Greenstone Hei Toki

This pendant is carved from Douglas Creek greenstone / Pounamu, which is becoming a rare stone nowadays.

The style of pendant is known as a Toki/Adze shape has proved to be very popular.

This piece is carved in the south island of New Zealand from Douglas Creek Greenstone by Nathan Jerry. Nathan is trained in traditional maori carving in wood, bone and stone. His has been carving traditional maori designs for more than 20 years. He is of Tainui decent and His Hapu is Ngati Kiriwai. He has the deepest respect for our nations most prized possession - pounamu. He currently lives in Invercargill and works from his own studio.

The pendant has been hand carved with a matte finish giving the pendant a beautiful natural and smooth feel.

The pendant measures approx. 50mm (2 inches) long, 35mm (1 inch) wide and 8mm (3/8 inch) thick, approx.

It is made from Douglas Creek Greenstone Pounamu, located on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Quite a rare stone these days. Fantastic colours when held to light. There are beautiful translucent areas in this piece. Light and dark green.

The pendant is a Hei Toki style.

The Toki

Known in English as the Adze. The Toki had much meaning to the Maori, it was of course an essential tool for the survival and day to day life of a Maori tribe, it was usually fashioned from stone or greenstone. The Maori also attribute the spiritual meaning of Strengh and Power to the Toki.

It is suspended on a traditional plaited waxed cord that is fully adjustable for the wearer, the piece comes with a velvet pouch with a meaning card.
