Mike Carlton

Mike Carlton is of Ngati Whakaue descent (Te Arawa sub-tribe) with affiliations to the Hinemoa Point Marae in Rotorua, New Zealand.

This artwork is a contemporary representation of Hei-Tiki, crafted from plantation grown hardwood and embellished with paua shell. It personifies primeval man. The tilted head symbolises clear thinking, the hands (strength), the mouth (communication), the heart (love) and the loins (fertility).

If one wears a Hei-Tiki, the wearer is assumed to be of strong character, clear thinking, perceptive, loyal and knowledgeable.
