The hei-matau or fish hook as it is more commonly known symbolises strength, prosperity, abundance, fertility and safe passage especially over water.  The hei-matau is held in great reverence by the Maori people as a cultural treasure.  According to Maori legend it is believed that the north island of New Zealand was once a huge fish caught by Maui, the great mariner.
